If you're into grindcore you probably already know in America you had bands like REPULSION, TERRORIZER and ASSUK leading the pack, and in the UK, NAPALM DEATH were spreading like wildfire after they appearred on a JOHN PEEL SESSION. But what was happening in New Zealand ? Well this is where it gets interesting. We had a band from the North Island fucking shit up called SINFEEDER (Hamilton) that had their roots even as far back as 1989 with a band called Animosity, which later in the 90's become AZAZEL. AZAZEL (fearured in the very top photo above) in their own right were insanely sick, eventually turning into the legendary grindchore band SINFEEDER in 1992. With Sean M on vox, Dane on bass and vox, Rory on guitar and Sean C on drums, they had an explosive sound, a cross between SPLATTERREAH and ANAL CUNT, making them one of the first grindcore bands in New Zealand. SINFEEDER had a sick early live performance at The Undergrads Bar in Hamilton that's available to watch on YouTube. A year later they released their first demo 'C is for Cannbial and D is for Dahmer' (featuring cover art of Jeffrey Dahmer), followed by a demo called ' No means Yes !' (1993) And a split with Quorthon (1993) And the last demo being called 'We Truly Really Fucking Hate You' (1994) featured on many compilations. A lot of their material is hard to find.
Another band obsessed with serial killers, and hard to find, was COUNTRY MURDER (Christchurch). Active from 2014-2016, with frontman Jeffrey Gross. Jeff, being a huge horror fan, took his name from the horror producer Jerry Gross. The other vocalist, The Bike Path Rapist, played banjo and guitar, doing banjo solos on top of grindcore riffs.
One show at the Wunderbar, in Lyttelton, started off with a Deliverance cover of Duelling Banjos which went straight into intense ANAL CUNT sounding grindcore. The band had a reputation for drugs violence and general debauchery. They only released one demo '7,597 Miles South of Texas' and performed a handful of shows.

ABORTED CHRISTIANS - Weed is Everything! (2009). Personal Favourite from Hamilton with animalistic screams and riffs that just straight up murder you. Themes include society, relgion and obviously.. yes you guessed it, weed . With a classic gem of a track ending the demo called 'Infernal Spot Ritual of Black Lung' how can you not love these dudes .These badass's also released two splits and featured on a compilation album. Prior to that they released a full length album called Police Up (2010).Another classics grindcore album is GORMUKILLIODOKUS - Come Back Lucifer (2017), which is the perfect blend of deathmetal and grindcore. A must hear for any fans of the genre.ONIBABA - Snuff Demo (2023) cover art features a drawing of the BTK Killer in woman's clothing wearing a mask. This is a disgusting raw grindcore sound taken from an early practice, reminiscent of early CARCASS.UNHOLY SEX CULT- self titled demo (2014). Heaps of distortion, feedback, static and full of tonnes of visceral hate.THE EXORCISM OF DAVID BAIN - self titled demo (2024). A psychedelic
journey through the life of David Bain through sporadic blasts of grindcore and wackiness.PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE - Sallys Eyes (2022). Extremely intense and abrasive grindcore featuring Rikko Mortis from VICISSITUDE and Jae Hulbert from VORTOKH that will melt your face off.SACRAMENT - Chainsaw Buttfuck Ep (2007), pure deathgrind filth with a very funny cover of a man wearing lingerie who looks like he's going to have his way with a car. A true Christchurch classic that's just pure filthyToday Grindcore is still going hard in New Zealand. One of main bands right now is KNIFED from Auckland (Andy Young: Guitars and Bass. Benny Matthews: Vox. Mark Hill: Drums/ Vox). KNIFED are insanely abrasive and fast, carrying on that grindcore spirit, with a 7 Inch that's sicker than AIDS.

Mastered by Will Killingsworth @ Dead Air Studios (Western Massachusetts, USA).The serial killer themes have been present in much of the material mentioned from COUNTRY MURDER's 'Stalker' about Richard Ramirez, KNIFED with tracks like 'Human Leg (Turning on an Open Fire)', PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE's name being taken from the alternative title of the Giallo film 'TORSO' which is about a serial killer and SINFEEDER with 'C Is for Cannbial, D is for Dahmer' featuring Jeffrey Dahmer on the cover (who was also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal). Dahmer killed and dismembered 17 males and even ate some of them. Here's a strange fact - the day the police raided Dahmer's house, the Milwaukee Metal Fest was happening down the road.For a small dot at the bottom of the world, New Zealand definitely have had their share of some insanely sick grindcore bands. With SINFEEDER leading the pack, between drunk banter and brutal screaming highs like Seth Putnam, to lows like Sal from SPLATTERREAH, their shows were an absolute celebration. The band left with no encore and distortion ringing through the venue. Only a fool would be dissatisfied with all the sick grindcore coming through this country.
